This position is funded by Yukon Summer Career Placements (SCP), which aims to provide quality summer employment opportunities for youth to develop skills and gain paid work experience to successfully transition into the labour market.
To be eligible, applicants must be legally allowed to work in Canada, not a member of the employer’s immediate family, not a current employee and must meet the definition of a Youth or a Student.
- A YOUTH is defined as a person between the ages of 16 and 25 who does not meet the definition of a student and who has been a Yukon resident since March 1, 2024.
- A STUDENT is defined as a person over the age of 15 who attended full-time at a secondary, post-secondary or vocational school for at least one semester during the current academic year.
Job Title: Labour Law Summer Student
Job Summary:
We are seeking a highly motivated and multi-talented law student to join our team in a full-time position for the summer months, funded by Yukon Summer Career Placement (SCP), focusing on the area of labour law.
This position will provide the opportunity for a law student in Yukon to be mentored by a member of the Yukon Law Society in an area of expertise where there is currently a shortage. Their work is in research, flowcharts, and resources for workers at risk will have a lasting community impact that will assist workers, without union representation, navigating the web of services and supports including CIRB, ESDC Labour Program, Canada Labour Code, complaint processes, Yukon Employment Standards, OHSC, workers compensation systems, Human Rights commission, Ombudsman, Workers Advocate, and understanding what is federally regulated, territorial, other government or employer driven.
Primary duties will be in research and policy work to develop/draft materials and resources that will benefit future workers at risk in Yukon.
- Review and environmental scan of WSCB regulations for Yukon with comparison across Canada, drafting a paper to inform future occupational health and safety protection for Yukon workers.
- Developing a flow chart of lines of support, processes, and forms for Yukon workers based on their employer or industry, for use by YFL and workers when determining how to best advocate for their issue.
- Draft resource tools in "layman's terms" to help explain common issues facing workers and the legislation that applies (eg. unjust dismissal, workplace discrimination or bullying, wage complaint).
- Assist with the intake of workers' issues or complaints, completing forms, contacting agencies, and explaining the processes available to address their concerns.
- Assist with pulling relevant case law, adapt resources from other jurisdictions, and learn while contributing to the wellness of society.
- Attend team meetings and engagement with partner organizations.
- Guest speaking or workshop facilitation to promote workers rights.
- Outreach to promote the services of the YFL to the public, especially immigrant workers.
Requirements:

- Strong communication and presentation skills
- proficiency in research, writing, and explaining complex information for a variety of grade levels
- technical skills for computer, office programs, and virtual meetings and presentations
Post-secondary education labour law, immigration law, human rights, or a related field; or experience with grievance/arbitration is an asset.
