Position Summary
Raven ReCentre is seeking a qualified Recycling Operations and Equipment Technician to support its materials processing, recycling infrastructure, and waste diversion operations. This position is primarily responsible for the safe operation of heavy and stationary equipment, processing and preparation of recyclable materials, preventative maintenance of equipment, and compliance with safety and regulatory requirements.
The Technician plays a key operational role in ensuring the efficient movement, processing, and shipment of recyclable commodities across Raven ReCentre’s warehouse, yard, and specialized processing areas, including metals, batteries, e waste, and producer responsibility programs. The role requires independent judgement, technical aptitude, and the ability to work safely across multiple operational environments.
Customer service and collection activities support the core operational mandate of the position but are secondary to materials processing and equipment operation responsibilities.
Core Responsibilities
Operations and Materials Processing
Operate forklifts, skid steers, balers, crushers, shredders, and other stationary and mobile equipment to receive, process, bale, weigh, tag, and stage recyclable materials for storage and shipment.
Receive recyclable commodities from community depots, rural drop off sites, commercial generators, and internal departments.
Sort and process materials including cardboard, paper, metals, batteries, e waste, glass, textiles, and reusable materials in accordance with operational and safety standards.
Prepare materials for outbound transport, including loading and unloading trucks and trailers.
Support special collection events and bottle drives as required.
Equipment Inspection and Preventative Maintenance
Conduct routine inspections of mobile and stationary equipment.
Perform basic troubleshooting and preventative maintenance to ensure safe and continuous operation of equipment.
Identify maintenance needs and report repair requirements to management.
Assist with minor repairs and upkeep of equipment, tools, and operational infrastructure, including support systems such as the wood boiler.
Safety, Compliance, and Regulatory Responsibilities
Work in compliance with Raven ReCentre’s Certificate of Recognition safety management system.
Apply knowledge of COR safety requirements, including hazard identification, safe work procedures, incident reporting, and participation in continuous safety improvement.
Apply knowledge of Extended Producer Responsibility requirements and producer responsibility organization operational standards.
Maintain clean, organized, and safe work environments across warehouse, yard, and processing areas.
Use appropriate personal protective equipment and follow all safety protocols.
Participate in incident and accident investigations and hazard assessments.
Demonstrate knowledge of spill response procedures and proper use of spill kits.
Collection and Logistics Support
Operate Raven ReCentre vehicles, including cube vans and e vans, to collect recyclables, paper, cardboard, and household batteries from government, commercial, and community locations within Whitehorse.
Communicate with client representatives to confirm collection requirements and schedules.
Maintain vehicle inspection records and mileage logs.
Administrative and Reporting Duties
Maintain accurate operational records, including receiving forms, bills of lading, bale records, safety checklists, repair reports, and internal tracking forms.
Complete timesheets and documentation required for departmental cost allocation and reporting.
Ensure records are organized, accurate, and accessible to management.
Working Conditions
Regular operation of heavy and stationary mechanical equipment.
Frequent exposure to indoor and outdoor work environments, including extreme temperatures.
Exposure to waste materials, chemicals, fumes, and loud environments, with PPE provided.
Physically demanding work, including lifting up to 25 kilograms.
Fast paced operational environment requiring flexibility and problem solving.
Occasional evening or weekend work as operationally required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
Minimum 2 years of experience in an industrial, warehouse, recycling, or materials processing environment.
Minimum 1 year of experience in preventative maintenance and basic repair of heavy machinery, stationary equipment, and mobile equipment.
Demonstrated ability to safely operate forklifts, skid steers, balers, crushers, shredders, cube vans, and e vans.
Working knowledge of COR safety programs and formal safety management systems.
Understanding of workplace safety legislation, including the Worker’s Compensation and Safety Act, Employment Standards Act, and Yukon Human Rights Act.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and make responsible operational decisions.
Strong written and verbal communication skills for operational and safety reporting.
Commitment to waste reduction, recycling, and circular economy principles.
Minimum 1 year of experience working with government or corporate clients.
Minimum 1 year of experience in a warehouse, depot, or recycling operation.
Required Qualifications and Certifications
Class 5 Driver’s Licence.
WHMIS certification.
Standard First Aid and CPR C certification.
Additional training and equipment certifications may be provided by the employer.
