Outdoor Operations Assistant

The Yukon Wildlife Preserve is seeking self-motivated, team-players to assist with the physical care and maintenance of the Preserve. This position is an important part of making the Yukon Wildlife Preserve a safe and enjoyable place to visit. The position is supervised by the Director of Outdoor Operations. Position start date: May 5th.
The Preserve is located at KM 8, Takhini Hot Springs Road (30km from downtown Whitehorse). Applicants require their own reliable transportation as this is the primary work location.
Duties:

  • Constructing new and repairing existing fences and shelters
  • Demolishing old infrastructure
  • Removing old fences and moving pipe and building/ fencing material
  • Repairing and painting of infrastructures
  • Landscaping and grounds maintenance
  • Other duties as required, including:
    • Contributing to general cleanliness of YWP
    • Providing Support for Animal Care, Visitor services and Programming & Education Staff

Qualifications:

  • Reliability, attention to detail, flexibility/adaptability to challenging situations and ability to work physically demanding hours in all weather conditions
  • Ability to work independently and as part of the team, common sense, physical fitness to repetitively lift heavy loads
  • Proficiency with use of hand and power tools
  • Experience with use of utility trailer (hook up, back up etc.)
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment such as loader and bobcat is an asset
  • Proficiency with cutting torch and welding
  • Ability to operate quads and /or snow machines
  • Previous related work experience is an asset
  • Valid Standard First Aid/CPR-C Certificate is an asset

Technical Requirements:

  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license
  • Clean drivers abstract
  • Ability to lift loads up to 50 lbs
  • Tetanus vaccination
  • Legally allowed to work in Canada.

Eligibility
This position may be supported by a funding subsidy program for students and youth. Please indicate if you meet the eligibility for a student or youth:

  • Student: over the age of 15 who attended a secondary, post-secondary or vocational school full-time during the current academic year for at least 1 semester.
  • Youth: between the ages of 15 and 25 who does not meet the definition of a student. To qualify, a youth must have been a Yukon resident since March 1, 2023.
