Restoration Operations Manager

Summary
YSR is in search of a Restoration Operations Manager (OM) to join our growing team. This position provides a unique opportunity to be a part of the Yukon’s growing restoration and reclamation economy. The OM will undertake a variety of tasks related to the management of the implementation of reclamation, restoration, and nature-based design projects throughout the Yukon for communities, industry, government, and non-governmental organizations. The OM will be particularly important in the management and implementation of field and community projects in the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyäk Dun’s Traditional Territory that embody and align with the principles of Dooli Law. This position is predominantly an office work role, with some minor field work periodically within the Yukon, and will work closely with the General Manager (GM) and Senior Restoration Ecologist. Reporting to the General Manager, you'll drive operational efficiency and growth across our diverse initiatives in an innovative startup environment. Your role is critical to coordinating teams and ensuring the successful implementation of our projects. A love for the natural world, appreciation for two-eyed-seeing, and desire to restore and steward the vibrant Yukon landscape is a must.
This position is permanent, 70% FTE, full time. This may develop into 100% FTE in future years.

Yukon Seed and Restoration Inc. (YSR) is a subsidiary of Na-Cho Nyäk Dun Development Corporation (NNDDC), the development corporation for the Citizens of the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyäk Dun.
YSR provides ecocultural restoration services and community-based environmental training through project planning, native plant research, and field ecology projects in the Yukon. We help industry, Indigenous, and non-profit organizations meet regulatory, social, and environmental goals to ultimately make the land good.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
The OM’s tasks will include:

  • Maintaining respectful relationships with clients, stakeholders and community members
  • Supervising field and technical staff, ensuring tools and training are in place
  • Overseeing and facilitating project leads to schedule work and equipment among projects and staff
  • Developing proposals, including work scopes and budgets
  • Developing and managing contracts and project management plans
  • Monitoring project progress in scope, schedule, and budget, using earned value method
  • Communicating project progress to the team, GM, and clients, identifying challenges and how they will be resolved
  • Facilitating project kickoff meetings and working with the technical team to ensure successful outcomes
  • Creating client invoices using Harvest software, and approving accounts payable invoices for Finance
  • Supporting the GM in developing long-term project forecasting, financial, and project planning
  • Providing input and advice to the General Manager with regards to opportunities or developments in Yukon restoration
  • Fostering participation of community members in projects
  • Providing leadership, guidance, and support to staff, acting as a technical resource in project management and OM
  • Data entry and tablet/ GPS uploads for mapping and reporting projects onto the YSR database.
  • Providing senior review on reporting for compliance with project scope, logical flow, YSR writing standards.
  • Managing direct reports, providing supervision, guidance, and mentorship
  • Collaborating with the restoration team to continue to develop processes, standards, and tools to reflect YSR’s safe operation
  • Developing and refining operational systems
  • Coordinating with subcontractors as needed.

Qualifications
The candidate will:

  • Have an undergraduate degree in a natural resource or business administration field (or equivalent experience)
  • Have 5+ years of OM experience
  • Have safe work practices, be detail oriented, and organized
  • Be a strong leader, able to motivate teams and drive organizational success
  • Be willing and able to work independently and take initiative to carry out activities to improve operations, with excellent problem-solving, decision-making, and strategic planning abilities
  • Be proficient using Microsoft Office Suite (or similar) software
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Have a valid Class 5 Yukon license or equivalent (required).

Desired Skills

  • Have 5+ years of experience in restoration or applied biology or natural resources management
  • Have some experience in ecology, native plants, and reclamation
  • Be proficient using MS Project
  • Be proficient in statistical analysis and report writing
  • Have knowledge of and experience with environmental standards, regulations and guidelines in Yukon.

Considered an Asset

  • Have experience working in the Yukon or similar northern settings
  • Have familiarity with First Nations communities and have respect for Indigenous ways of knowing
  • Have a PMP designation
  • Be willing to spend a portion of the summer field season (up to approximately a week per month twice a year) in remote locations, including hotel and camp settings
  • Hold a valid certification in Wilderness First Aid.
