Job Summary
The Residential & Commercial Overhead Door Team Lead is responsible for leading and coordinating the safe and efficient installation, maintenance, and repair of residential and commercial overhead door systems. This role involves supervising installers, delegating tasks, ensuring quality workmanship, enforcing safety standards, and supporting problem-solving on complex installations. The Team Lead works closely with the Overhead Door Manager, as well as customers to ensure projects are completed on time, within scope, and to Northerm’s high standards.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Supervision
- Supervise, mentor, and support a team of overhead door installers.
- Delegate daily tasks and assignments according to project needs and team skills.
- Provide on-the-job training, coaching, and guidance to new and existing team members.
- Conduct regular check-ins to ensure team productivity, safety compliance, and quality workmanship.
Installation & Technical Expertise
- Lead installation, maintenance, and repair projects, particularly complex or high-priority jobs.
- Assist installers with technical challenges, ensuring proper installation techniques are followed.
- Verify that all work is performed according to company standards, client expectations, and safety protocols.
Planning, Coordination & Communication
- Collaborate with the Overhead Door Manager and Overhead Door Coordinator to schedule installations, service calls, and maintenance tasks.
- Ensure materials, tools, and equipment are organized and available for scheduled jobs.
- Communicate project updates, issues, and requirements to management and team members.
- Act as the primary point of contact for on-site client interactions, addressing concerns professionally.
Safety & Compliance
- Monitor and enforce safe work practices, including proper use of PPE and adherence to company safety protocols.
- Conduct pre-job safety briefings and post-job reviews with the team.
- Report hazards, incidents, or near-misses to management promptly.
Inventory & Resource Management
- Assist in managing inventory of parts, tools, and supplies in the shop and work vehicles.
- Coordinate with supervisors to ensure timely ordering and availability of materials.
- Ensure team members use resources efficiently and responsibly.
Reporting & Accountability
- Track team performance, progress, and productivity on a daily basis.
- Identify potential delays, challenges, or training needs and proactively address them.
- Prepare reports for the Overhead Door Manager as needed regarding completed work, resource usage, and safety compliance.
Requirements
- High School Diploma.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in residential or commercial overhead door installation, or related construction/manufacturing experience.
- Previous experience leading or supervising a small team is preferred.
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License with a clean abstract.
- Comfortable working safely at heights and in safety-sensitive environments.
- Ability to operate hand and power tools safely and effectively.
- Physically able to lift heavy loads and perform tasks requiring standing, bending, and kneeling for extended periods.
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Current Fall Arrest, First Aid, and WHMIS certifications (or willingness to obtain).
- Demonstrated commitment to safety, leadership, and maintaining a professional work environment.
