Fireweed is seeking a strategic and hands-on Director of Health & Safety to lead the development and implementation of a Health & Safety Management Framework as our company transitions from mineral exploration to project development. This role will shape our safety culture, systems, and field practices across diverse and remote operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Strategic Leadership:Develop and evolve a corporate Health & Safety Framework aligned with YT, NWT and Canadian regulations and industry best practices. Provide regular performance and risk updates to executives and the Board.
- System Design & Implementation:Build and roll out an integrated Health & Safety Management System covering risk management, incident reporting, contractor oversight, emergency response, training, and occupational hygiene.
- Field Operations Support:Lead safety planning and audits across exploration and development sites. Support logistics, camp, and construction safety in collaboration with field teams.
- Critical Risk & Incident Management:Establish a Critical Risk Management program and a learning-oriented incident investigation process. Promote a no-blame safety culture with accountability.
- Contractor Safety Oversight:Implement contractor prequalification, onboarding, and audit systems. Ensure consistent safety standards across remote operations.
- Training & Culture Development:Roll out role-based training programs and safety leadership coaching. Foster recognition for safety innovation and excellence.
- Occupational Health & Hygiene:Oversee programs for health monitoring, fatigue management, sanitation, and remote medical response.
- Compliance & Governance:Ensure regulatory compliance and lead external audits. Maintain permits and prepare executive-level safety reports.
- Team Leadership:Build and mentor a growing Health & Safety team. Define roles and promote visible safety leadership across the organization.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field.
- 10–15+ years in H&S leadership roles in mining, construction, or resource development.
- Proven experience implementing H&S systems in a transitioning development company.
- Strong background in remote northern operations, contractor management, and safety culture change.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills.
- Willingness to travel regularly to remote communities (e.g., Ross River, Mayo, and Northwest Territories) and project sites.
Remote field work (regular rotation) at project sites for part of the year (April-November and other times) is required.The role can be based in Fireweed's Vancouver, BC office or Whitehorse, YT office.
