Reporting to the Manager of Medical Rehabilitation Services and working with staff of the Yukon Hospital Corporation (YHC) and the general public, the Rehabilitation Assistant (RA) assists Physiotherapists (PT), Occupational Therapists (OT), and Speech Language Therapists (SLP) in the rehabilitation of hospital patients. This position performs assigned tasks and treatments for hospital patients under the clinical direction of an OT, PT, or SLP.
Knowledge, skills and abilities required:

  • Knowledge of general medical terminology and conditions;
  • Basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology;
  • Some knowledge of office procedures;
  • Excellent judgment, problem solving and organizational skills;
  • Time management skills;
  • Effective oral and written communication skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills;
  • Demonstrated computer skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to work directly with individual clients and groups;
  • Ability to lead individual and group rehab programs under the direction of a rehab professional;
  • Ability to display tact, patience and understanding to patients/clients;
  • Ability to work with and motivate people from various ages, backgrounds and cultures;
  • Ability to schedule clients and keep accurate statistics;
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision;
  • Cross cultural awareness;
  • Demonstrated computer skills.

The successful candidate is required to have a Therapy Assistant (OTA or PTA) diploma from an accredited Canadian program or a Kinesiology Degree with at least one year of experience working as a Rehabilitation Assistant. Recent experience providing treatment under the direction of a physiotherapist/occupational therapist in a hospital setting, experience ordering rehab equipment & supplies and experience with mechanical checks and minor repairs of wheelchairs are desired.
