Organization Overview: The Arctic Winter Games (AWG) are a bi-annual world class sporting and cultural event, with 2,000 participants and an equal number of volunteers from around the circumpolar north. Designed to celebrate the unique sports and cultural heritage of the Arctic, this multisport event showcases 20+ traditional and non-traditional sport competitions as well as a weeklong cultural exchange program. The Whitehorse 2026 Arctic Winter Games Host Society was formed to plan and deliver the 2026 Arctic Winter Games.
Position Overview: As a member of the 2026 Arctic Winter Games Host Society, the Cultural Manager will lead the planning, coordination, and execution of all cultural programming, ensuring an authentic and meaningful representation of Yukon’s diverse cultural heritage. This position will oversee cultural exchanges, performances and reconciliation initiatives, while also managing contracts associated with the cultural program, Opening and Closing Ceremonies, and artistic collaborations. The Cultural Manager will work closely with the Cultural Advisory Committee, Yukon First Nations, artists, and other key stakeholders to create an inclusive and dynamic cultural experience for participants and spectators. This position requires a creative and collaborative individual with strong communication skills, a deep understanding of performing arts and production.
Key Responsibilities:
Cultural Program Development & Implementation:
- Lead the planning and execution of the Arctic Winter Games Cultural Program, including cultural exchanges, daily performances and reconciliation initiatives.
- Organize and oversee the Cultural Gala, ensuring engagement from all participating contingents.
- Develop cultural training sessions for AWG staff, volunteers, and participants, focusing on Indigenous protocols, traditions, and cultural etiquette.
- Ensure integration of cultural elements across AWG venues and sporting events.
Contract Management:
- Manage contracts related to cultural programming, including agreements with artists, vendors, production teams, and cultural organizations.
- Oversee contract negotiations and logistics for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, ensuring alignment with AWG values and protocols.
Stakeholder Engagement & Collaboration:
- Work closely with the Cultural Advisory Committee to ensure authentic representation of Yukon’s cultural heritage.
- Collaborate with Yukon First Nations, local artists, and cultural leaders to create programming that aligns with community values.
- Coordinate with AWG operational teams to ensure seamless integration of cultural initiatives within the broader Games framework.
Event Coordination & Logistics:
- Organize monthly meetings with Cultural Contingents to align on cultural programming.
- Oversee scheduling and logistics for cultural events, ensuring smooth execution across multiple venues.
- Help to facilitate sacred fires, smudging ceremonies, and reconciliation initiatives in accordance with cultural protocols.
Other Key Responsibilities:
- Budget Management: With the General Manager and 2026 Arctic Winter Games Management team, manage assigned budgets effectively, tracking expenses and revenue and optimizing resource allocation.
- Reporting and Analysis: Monitor and analyze performance metrics and provide regular reports and insights to committee members and General Manager.
- Relationship Management: Build and maintain strong relationships with 2026 Arctic Winter Games management team to ensure all interdependencies are identified and addressed.
Qualifications:
- Post-secondary diploma/degree in Cultural Studies, Event Management, Arts Administration, Indigenous Studies, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in arts or cultural program development and management.
- Strong knowledge of Yukon’s cultural landscape, including Indigenous traditions and contemporary arts.
- Experience managing contracts, budgets, and vendor relationships.
- Excellent organizational and project management skills.
- Strong communication and relationship-building abilities.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, including government agencies, cultural institutions, and community groups.
- Experience in large-scale event planning is an asset.
Conditions of Employment:
- Office hours may fluctuate at different points during the planning process leading up to the Games but will normally not exceed 40 hours per week.

Salary Range: $85,000 - $100,000
