Low Barrier Outreach Worker (2-3 days/week)

Yukon Womenʼs Transition Home Society is hiring a Part Time Low Barrier Outreach Worker.

  • Hours of work: 2-3 days per week with opportunity for additional shifts
  • Wage, shift premium and generous benefit package as per the Collective Agreement.

Position Summary
The Low Barrier Outreach Worker (LBOW) will report to the Manager of Kaushee’s Place and will provide outreach, information, support, referrals and advocacy to women and gender diverse people experiencing violence who for various reasons may not be suitable to stay at the Transition Home. This may include but is not limited to women and gender diverse people actively using substances, those with complex mental health issues and/or women who cannot live in a communal environment. The LBOW will provide clients with support and peer counselling, perform client-based administrative tasks, participate in maintaining effective and positive relationships with other agencies and landlords, and provide educational and other resources to both clients, YWTH staff and partner agencies.
Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide outreach support services to women participating in the program; provide crisis outreach services, supportive listening, appropriate referrals, accompaniment, and advocacy to women accessing the program, in person and over the phone
  • Use non-judgmental peer counseling as well as harm reduction principles to assist women in identifying and exploring their options; makes referrals as necessary
  • Performs duties and chores assigned to the shift, such as: conducting intakes, buying groceries and preparing food for the women, delivering meals and supplies, performing regular check-ins etc.
  • Models healthy boundaries and positive social relationships with women, coworkers and others

Qualifications

  • Sound knowledge and understanding of violence against women and the unique responses women have to that violence;
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of the particular issues and challenges faced by women experiencing abuse who use substances and/or live with complex mental health conditions;
  • Familiarity with response-based an harm reduction approaches an asset
  • General knowledge of community agencies and resources
  • Excellent verbal and good written communication skills; ability to use word processing and use internet for communications and research purposes
  • Ability to work independently and with limited supervision

  • Valid Class 5 Yukon Driver's License
  • Current Criminal Records Check
  • First Aid and CPR C
  • Naloxone Administration
