Labour Law Summer Student

The Yukon Federation of Labour (YFL) is launching the Migrant and Precarious Workers Legal Navigation Pilot Project, funded by the Yukon Law Foundation. This initiative will expand access to justice for migrant, Indigenous, and precariously employed workers across Yukon. Through legal navigation services, outreach workshops, and public legal education, the project will empower workers to understand and exercise their rights.
Job Summary
Law Student Interns will provide direct legal navigation support to workers, helping them identify legal issues, understand jurisdictional pathways, and complete applications to employment standards, human rights tribunals, and workers’ compensation boards. Interns will also contribute to outreach workshops, resource development, and community engagement.
Key Responsibilities

  • Legal Navigation Support
    • Assist workers in identifying relevant legal issues and complaint processes
    • Support completion of applications and referrals to appropriate agencies
    • Provide plain-language explanations of rights and procedures
  • Outreach & Education
    • Participate in the delivery of eight legal rights workshops across the Yukon.
    • Contribute to the development of culturally relevant public legal education resources (brochures, guides, online materials)
    • Engage with migrant, Indigenous, and precarious workers in community settings
  • Research & Resource Development
    • Conduct legal research on employment standards, human rights, workers’ compensation, and misclassification issues
    • Adapt resources from other jurisdictions for Yukon’s context
    • Draft plain-language tools to help workers navigate complex systems
  • Collaboration & Reporting
    • Work closely with the Project Coordinator, communications specialist, community partners and affiliate unions of the federation of labour.
    • Maintain accurate records of worker support and workshop participation
    • Provide structured reflections on training, mentorship, and project impact

Qualifications

  • Current enrollment in a JD or law program (University of Victoria, UBC, or equivalent)
  • Strong interest in labour law, human rights, immigration law, or social justice advocacy
  • Excellent research, writing, and communication skills
  • Ability to explain complex legal concepts in plain language
  • Respectful awareness of Yukon First Nations’ histories, cultures, and protocols, with a commitment to equity, inclusion, and culturally safe engagement.
  • Ability to travel to remote Yukon and First Nations communities (expenses covered)
  • Experience in community outreach or advocacy is an asset

Learning & Mentorship
Interns will receive:

  • Training in Yukon-specific legal frameworks, cultural safety, and ethical considerations
  • Hands-on experience in legal navigation, outreach, and public legal education
  • Opportunities to contribute to systemic change and access to justice in northern communities

Contract Details

  • Term: 3 months placement March-June)
  • Hours: 35 hours per week
  • Rate: $25/hour
  • Travel: Some travel to remote Yukon and First Nations communities required (expenses covered by project budget)
