Reporting to the Healthcare Security Coordinator, the Healthcare Security Officer is responsible for providing patient centered protective services at Whitehorse General Hospital for patients, visitors, volunteers and staff in a courteous, friendly, professional, and trauma informed manner. Healthcare Security Officers are members of an interdisciplinary care team who collaborate with clinical team members in the development of patient safety plans. This position has an acting role in the response to all hospital emergency codes and provides education and support to all staff in the application of corporate health and safety policies in which they provide a major role. This position will complete written reports of all serious events, and complete health and safety assignments as directed. The Healthcare Security Officer position also serves as WGH's designated First Aid Attendant that is responsible for responding to first aid situations on the WGH Campus, and maintaining WGH's First Aid Room. The Healthcare Security Officer is also responsible for ensuring building security and conducting security assessments.
Knowledge, skills and abilities required:
- Excellent knowledge of personal safety, security protocols, and escalation techniques;
- Excellent knowledge of culture, traditions, social history and economic conditions of Yukon First Nations;
- Ability to providing culturally safe care
- Ability to work with all people and develop and maintain effective interpersonal relationships;
- Knowledge of the paging systems, telephone consoles, panic buttons;
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, data systems;
- Outstanding oral communication skills and excellent written skills;
- Ability to complete Security Incident Report, Security Condition Report, and complete a log book;
- Excellent knowledge of communication and engagement strategies, methods and practices;
- Good analytical, problem solving and evidence-based, decision-making skills;
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to model appropriate behavior and influence others to work effectively as a team;
- Excellent engagement and facilitation skills;
- Strong organizational, coordination, and time-management skills;
- Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy when dealing with all of our people, partners and stakeholders;
- Ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary healthcare team;
- Ability to be self-directed, take initiative, be assertive, and prioritize workload;

The successful applicant will have Standard First Aid with Level C CPR/AED, Valid Yukon Class 5 Drivers License with a Clear Driving Abstract, Successful Completion of Yukon Hospital's Healthcare Officer Training, Obtain a criminal record check with vulnerable sector, Secondary (high) school diploma or GED, Must be bondable. Course work in Healthcare Security, Bilingual (English and French) would be considered an asset, Experience in a healthcare setting would be considered an asset, Experience in working with high-risk populations would be considered an asset.
