The Community Mental Wellness and Addictions Outreach Worker provides support and advocacy services to citizens struggling with mental health and/or addictions. The position reports to the Mental Wellness and Addictions Manager and the position will assist in the development of sustainable harm reduction strategies for Whitehorse and Old Crow. The position will be primarily based in Whitehorse. Some of the responsibilities include but are not limited to;

  • Developing and delivering mental wellness and substance use education and prevention programs.
  • Supporting aftercare initiatives by providing groups, social activities, and aftercare plan follow-up.
  • Making referrals to support services and counselling as needed.
  • Supporting the Health, Social & Recreational Director and Mental Wellness and Addictions Manager to conduct regular sessions and meetings with the public to communicate information and consult.
  • Responding to citizen concerns as they arise.
  • Responding to crisis situations of employees and citizens and consulting with appropriate parties to identify and achieve solutions.
  • Flexible Work Hours: Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation offers flexible working hours. Employees may choose to work 65, 70, 75, or 80 hours biweekly (some guidelines will apply)
  • 4 weeks’ vacation to start plus two weeks paid time off over the Christmas season

  • Minimum Certification in Addictions and Mental Health, Community Service Worker, or related.
  • Considerable experience delivering Mental Wellness and Addictions services and programs; in an indigenous community is an asset.
  • Experience providing community outreach support services
  • Experience building partnerships with community resources and external contacts to promote the wellbeing of families and citizens.
