Blood Ties is looking for Health Care Providers to work at the Supervised Consumption Site (SCS).
Blood Ties’ supervised consumption site provides a safe and confidential space for people to consume their drugs and has one of the only smoking rooms in Canada, which uses state of the art filtration technology to provide a safe environment for clients to smoke substances under supervision. Community members can also access wrap-around services at the site, including harm reduction education and support, referrals, drug-checking services, and harm reduction supplies.
We are looking for paramedics and nurses to work as Health Care Providers at the site providing critical and life-saving care to people who use substances. The role involves providing accessible medical care grounded in harm reduction and focuses on prevention, education, health promotion, medical assessment, chronic disease management, and crisis intervention. Health Care Providers are required to work collaboratively within an integrated team that includes support workers and peer support workers.
Hours of work will be during the site’s operating hours: 10:30AM – 9:30PM 7 days per week. These hours may shift to meet clients needs.
We are looking for candidates for full-time, part-time, and auxiliary on-call positions.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide care to people who use substances, including individuals experiencing mental health concerns, substance dependencies, and homelessness in accordance with the values of respect, social justice, and autonomy that guide Blood Ties’ work
  • Conduct suicide risk assessments, de-escalation, and referrals to emergency supports as needed
  • Offer wound care, infection support, and chronic disease management support
  • Intervene during instances of overdose and other medical emergencies according to established policies, including but not limited to administering oxygen, injecting naloxone, conducting CPR, and using an automated emergency defibrillator (AED)
  • Educate clients on safer consumption techniques, harm reduction strategies, and naloxone administration
  • Assist clients with injecting substances as per site policy (staff may not pierce the skin or push the plunger may provide hands on support when needed)
  • Maintain a safe, professional, and respectful environment by upholding the site-specific Code of Conduct and de-escalating conflicts
  • Collaborate with staff to ensure seamless client flow and safety within the facility.
  • Ensure compliance with operational policies and procedures of the site
  • Act in a professional and courteous manner in all instances
  • Work collaboratively within an integrated team
  • Refer clients to other health and social supports as needed and collaborate with other service providers to support clients

Required Qualifications:

  • One of the following:
    • Completion of a recognized paramedical program and valid Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) license from a Canadian jurisdiction OR
    • Bachelor’s or diploma in nursing and active nursing registration in Canada
  • Training/experience in anti-racism, cultural safety, and trauma-informed care
  • First Aid and CPR certification
  • Proficiency in computer programs (e.g., Zoom, Word, Excel, Google Drive)
  • Physical ability to perform CPR, kneel to provide care, lift up to 30 lbs, re-position clients with assistance, and stand for extended periods as needed
  • Compassionate, non-judgmental approach to working with marginalized individuals
  • Strong communication, crisis management, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to uphold confidentiality and clear personal boundaries, and ability to support others to do the same
  • Ability to use tact, self-awareness, and sound judgement in situations that may be complex or urgent, including critical incidents (e.g. responding to overdoses)
  • Strong case management and systems navigation skills, working together with clients, co-workers, and other service providers

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Thorough understanding of harm reduction, health equity, and social justice principles
  • Experience providing healthcare in community settings, particularly with people who use substances and/or experience other forms of marginalization
  • Valid Yukon Driver’s License and a clear driver’s abstract
  • Up-to-date Basic Life Support and Airway Management/Oxygen certification
  • Lived experience accessing harm reduction services is an asset

Preference given to applicants with lived or living experience of substance use and applicants who identify as First Nations, Metis or Inuit/Inuk.
