Your Role
Reporting to the Manager of Natural Resources, the Environmental Coordinator is responsible for the planning, coordination, and project management of a variety of environmental monitoring and natural resource initiatives, including but not limited to salmon conservation. This role supports C/TFN’s stewardship responsibilities through both field and office-based work, ensuring that projects align with C/TFN values, legal frameworks, and cultural priorities. The coordinator works collaboratively with internal departments, community members, and external agencies, and plays a key role in maintaining compliance with environmental legislation, supporting field staff, and representing C/TFN at co-management tables.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Project manage a range of environmental monitoring and natural resource initiatives, including C/TFN’s salmon-related work. This includes representing C/TFN at relevant tables, applying for and managing project funding, organizing and participating in fieldwork, and ensuring timely delivery of project objectives.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate environmental monitoring programs in collaboration with the Natural Resources Manager
  • Prepare reports, records, and documentation such as progress updates, briefing notes, and project schedules. Present reports to the Land Management Board when requested by the Natural Resources Manager.
  • Conduct joint environmental assessments and/or inspections on proposed land dispositions, development proposals, and consultations
  • Assist in the development of policies related to wildlife, environmental protection, and ecological legislation
  • Monitor environmental compliance, conduct site inspections, respond to wildlife complaints, and document nuisance wildlife reports
  • Immediately report complaints, incidents, or wildlife-related issues requiring senior administrative attention to the Natural Resources Manager, Office Administrator, or the relevant C/TFN department
  • Provide support for field research conducted by Environmental Monitors and contractors, including desktop and on-site research, project reviews, land applications, and data collection
  • Participate in daily or weekly briefings with the Natural Resources Manager or delegate to review current work plans and goals
  • Communicate any changes to the schedule promptly to the Natural Resources Manager
  • Develop, implement, and maintain safety protocols for ongoing projects and activities
  • Support and mentor Environmental Technicians, providing guidance and assistance in the field and office as needed.

Essential Qualifications

  • Degree or Diploma in Renewable Resources, Environmental Science, Biological Sciences or related fields (or equivalent experience) is strongly preferred.
  • Minimum two years government or field experience (for example, Conservation Officer, Park Ranger/warden) may be considered.
  • Prior experience supervising field staff will be considered an asset.

Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Suitability

  • Experience supervising field staff will be considered an asset.
  • Experience in enforcement, note taking and legislation compliance is an asset.
  • A Valid Drivers Licence is Mandatory. Certifications in ATV, Snow-machine, Pleasure Craft/ Boat Operators card, and PAL is mandatory, under certain circumstances Pleasure Craft, ATV & Boat Certificates can be obtained in 3-6 months of hire, acknowledging the seasons and ability to obtain.
  • Experience in enforcement, note taking and legislation compliance.
  • Knowledge of Yukon First Nation Final Agreements is required.
  • Knowledge of C/TFN history, culture, demographics, goals and aspirations.
  • Conflict resolution skills are an asset.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong time management, organization and prioritizing skills.
  • Ability to arrange, set up, coordinate and facilitate various workshops.
  • Strong computer skills including, Word Processing, Spreadsheets (data entry and processing), email, GPS, Internet use and knowledge, databases, and or Google Earth and related governments map-viewer programs.
  • Ability to meet critical deadlines and to problem solve.
  • Ability to relate to issues and remain tactful in stressful situations and respond to enquiries professionally.
  • Ability to handle crisis situations, difficult people, behaviour and stressful deadlines.
