Position Summary

As an integral member of Northerm’s Management Team, and reporting directly to the President, the Controller is responsible for overseeing all financial, accounting and human resource activities. It provides leadership in the areas of full cycle accounting operations, financial management reporting while ensuring full compliance of all regulatory, tax and legal obligations relating to the financial operations. It provides oversight of human resources and administrative processes for both Northerm (Whitehorse, Y.T.) and Capitol Glass (Anchorage, AK).

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Oversees the accounting operations and financial management by:
  • Participating in the development of and support the company’s strategic plans.
  • Developing and implementing long and short term company financial planning including assisting in the preparation of company financial forecasting and projections.
  • Assisting the President in ensuring all banking requirements including obtaining long-term debt, lines of credit, and other financial requirements are fulfilled in the most cost effective and efficient manner possible and all bank reporting requirements are met on a timely basis.
  • Monitoring the financial performance of the company.
  • Assisting with the implementation, monitoring, and management of monthly and annual operating budgets by analyzing and reviewing financial statements and reports and discussing with management.
  • Overseeing the development and finalization of annual operating and capital budgets, in collaboration with the Management Team.
  • Compiling and analyzing financial reporting packages and presenting to the Board of Directors and Senior Management team.
  • Developing and managing financial controls in accordance with the company’s procedures.
  • Overseeing the preparation of comprehensive year end financial statements and tax returns and working closely with external accounting firm on annual audit of financials.
  • Communicating financial metrics to senior management.
  • Providing leadership and support to accounts receivable and accounts payable personnel.
  • Developing and maintaining effective and efficient workflow policies and procedures.
  • Working with third parties, monitor, maintains and evaluates the effectiveness of management information systems including all accounting software systems, upgrades, and supporting databases.
  • Reviewing the preparation and processing of payroll for personnel.
  • Mentoring, supervising and motivating a team while developing good relationships at all levels of the organization, and reviewing performance and identifying training opportunities.
  • Supporting the human resources (HR) personnel by ensuring compliance with policies and procedures and ongoing maintenance of HR practices and keeping current on human resources trends.
  • Presenting Health and Safety reports to the Board of Directors on a quarterly basis.
  • Researching funding opportunities and preparing proposals for funding, implementing, and reporting.
  • Responding to surveys from Statistics Canada.

2. Performs other duties, such as:

  • Remaining current on accounting practices by attending workshops, seminars, professional development, as required.
  • Researching new innovative ideas regarding efficiencies.
  • Assisting the President with assigned projects and duties such as regular board reporting, business planning, research, automation initiatives, etc.

Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation is required. Proven work experience in an accounting or financial management role is required. Proficiency in Adagio accounting software or similar software would be an asset. Experience supervising staff would be an asset. Previous accounting experience in the manufacturing industry would be an asset. Experience working with Indigenous partnerships will be a strong asset.
Conditions of Employment

  • A valid Yukon Class 5 driver’s license with a driver’s abstract (minimum 3 years).
  • Criminal Records Check
  • Maintain professional designation requirement for CPA
  • Willing to travel within and outside of the Yukon
  • Willingness to work evenings and/or weekends, as required
  • Extended workdays may be required to accomplish tasks and meet workload demands during peak periods, as directed
