The truth is, people spend most of their time at home. It’s where the bed is, dinner table and couch. It’s where many find comfort. When Erik’s Audio Video transformed into a store that specializes in Canadian made furniture and luxury bedding after 30 years of being an electronic store, it was just what Yukoner’s needed. With still the best selection of TV and audio, might we add, it’s now a local business that offers beautiful products that uniquely gives your home a signature, authentic look. Our next #LookInside feature takes us inside Signature Home Yukon.
We sat down with Tanner Hougen, to learn more about how his family re-branded their store to offer Yukoner’s quality handmade furniture. We asked what Yukoners need to know about this business that they may now know?
“Well, we know there's still a lot of people who haven't been to our new store yet because many of the reactions we get are, "wow, this store is really nice!" We love to tell people that nearly all of our furniture brands are handmade right here in Canada - from coast to coast. Just like we care about supporting local, we care about supporting Canadian. We also offer a huge selection of quality bedding and pillows - because everyone needs to sleep well! We truly are excited to sell each and every piece of furniture, knowing it is of great quality and our customers will love it for years. We always say we don't want to see any of our furniture on Whitehorse Buy and Sell as you'll just love it for longer!”
As a company driven on community-based values, Signature Home believes the best part about doing business in Whitehorse is having meaningful relationships with customers and getting to know them because you never seeing someone just once. “We have some incredible customers who check out what's new every couple of weeks, they pop in to say hi, and some even are furnishing their homes room by room with us! There are some great people up here and building relationships with our customers is by far one of the highlights of being in business!”
Giving back is in their blood too. “We support as many local initiatives as possible! We're constantly donating products to many different silent auctions, tournaments, fundraisers and more. It's a great feeling to help people raise money for amazing causes - and we really appreciate all the cards and letters of support we receive in return. We also love to take part in things like Spring Makeover, throwing summer BBQs and whatever we can do to give back to the community.”
Learning that Tanner has had many days on the floor now as Manager, we asked what the most memorable day on the job has been. “In business, I think there are a ton of memorable days on the job - majority good and the odd tough ones! I think some of the best days are when parents bring in their kids who normally wouldn't want to come to a furniture store...but end up loving it! From all the comfortable sofas and chairs, to the crisp demo pictures on our TVs, it's actually a great place for a family to shop. We also love to do special things for the kids with little footballs made out of our pillows so they leave with something pretty cool!”
As this business continues to evolve, the future looks bright. Keeping up with the current needs of Yukoners and investing in quality products to offer Yukoners is on the radar, “I believe people are really starting to want to invest more into quality furniture that's going to last for years and loving buying Canadian made”, Tanner shares. Much like the showroom, something else that continues to evolve is the way this company connects with their customers – social media is a pillar of their marketing strategy. “I am available almost always on our Facebook page, and love sharing the new items we have in store, and in return, answering any and all questions our customers have”.
As a Yukoner born and bred, we had to ask, what’s one thing you can’t live without North of 60?
“I'm definitely a sucker for a nice cold Winterlong Brewing Co. Mountain Hero.”
And dare we say, paired with a comfy couch, and epic TV?
